How do you turn a creative idea into a successful business? Whether it’s setting up a design studio, digital agency, photography business or running a gallery, knowing the basics of business is an essential part of creating a new venture.

We’re absolutely delighted to have curated this course series called Startup Essentials in collaboration with The Design Museum. We hosted a three-part course which covered several essential aspects of setting up a creative business: how to network effectively, legal basics, and finance. Through seminar discussions led by experts and hands-on activities, participants learned the skills and knowledge they need to begin to turn their creative ideas into business reality.

I learnt things I had previously had trouble finding out on my own

    What we covered:

How to Network – by Carolyn Dailey, Founder, Creative Entrepreneurs
The power of connection: how things happen today. Defining goals, research, preparing marketing materials, strategies and techniques… and tips on how to cultivate longterm relationships.

Legal Basics for Creative Startups – by Malcolm Murray, Partner, Lee & Thompson
Starting at what the common characteristics of creative industry businesses are, to delving into how to deel with employees, freelancers, how to incentivise and retain
key creative individuals… and finally, an overview of intellectual property and understanding what you own and how to exploit and protect it.

Financial Basics for Creative Startups – by  Dave Morrisson from Nyman Libson Paul and Shaun Beaney from ICAEW

From accounting basics such as information tracking & financial planning to understanding tax, HMRC, VAT, SEIS and so on. In addition; how do you fundraise?

This course offered hands-on advice and knowledge

We’re really looking forward to hosting and delivering more of these courses in the future, in fact, watch this space here!

Participants found this a useful and practical course, in an inspiring yet relaxing environment. Whilst it was both inspiring to hear from and get hold of real experts and professionals, it was also useful to network with like-minded people.

It has given us many things to think about and many things to follow up. Very thought provoking
